Utilitywise poses a bit of a quandary for investors. The firm operates as an independent energy broker or “middleman” for major energy suppliers (British Gas, eon, EDF, nPower etc) and helps large and small businesses to switch their gas or electricity to cheaper suppliers; the service is effectively “free” for customers as Utilitywise gets paid a commission directly by the energy supplier. 90% of the company's revenues is from commissions paid by the energy suppliers for procuring business from these SMEs.
