McCarthy & Stone’s shares had flown past 200p before it issued a trading update that took the wind out of its sails. It said that in the year already ended on 31 August, the last couple of months were a bit soft so results will be a little light although the current year outlook is unchanged.During the year McCarthy acquired 65 sites,   equivalent to c.2,614 additional plots and the land bank stands at 10,206 plots or 4.4 years’ supply, leaving net cash of £52m at the year end. As it was, a combination of a 20% jump in legal completions to 2,299 units and an 8% climb in average selling prices to £259,000 meant overall sales grew by a third to £635m.
