Sometimes “cows” can present the most unexpected growth share investments. On SCSW I alighted on Genus in 2002 at 176p (now £23) at a time when the market was reacting to its business with stifled yawns. Genus used to supply bull semen to the UK’s dairy farmers who would inseminate their cattle each year to start milk production and the company had bred super bulls, which had certain characteristics to achieve better milk yields.  Subsequently, I went on to recommend Avon Rubber (AVON; 1185p), which had a business producing rubberware. A normal cow has four teats and Avon’s linings would connect these to the milking machine in a milking parlour, collapsing under vacuum to massage the teat to produce milk flow.
