It is estimated that there are now more than one-in-ten retail units sitting vacant in the UK and perhaps it is just me but amongst the local parades, almost every time I look there appears to be another hairdresser, nail shop or charity shop taking up occupation. It is clear that there are few other local retailer concepts willing to take occupation and, of course, landlords are happy to have some cash coming in rather than have a unit sitting vacant (as an aside, a landlord starts to pay business rates after a unit has been vacant for six months and having a tenant in, even a transient one, will reset the clock).
