There was an astonishing trading update during the month from English leather goods brand Mulberry (MUL; 520p), which reported that the first ten weeks of the year had seen blistering like-for-like sales growth of 79% in its UK stores. Mulberry makes most of its money supplying leather belts and handbags and the shares now trade on a multiple of over 40x. This might look high but analysts say it is fully deserved as the business has potential to develop as a global brand. Mulberry vividly demonstrates how a fashion brand can achieve a remarkable rejuvenation and sidestep most of the general problems in retailing.
