Five years ago, when shares in Telecom Plus (TEP; 142p) were last trading at around current levels, we added them to our Growth Portfolio 2. At the time, we started off our recommendation with an apology - for picking a telecoms company during the telecoms rout. But as it was, the recommendation turned out to be a fairly successful one with the shares subsequently peaking in early ‘04 at 407p, as investors began to appreciate the high level repeat element to the group‘s sales. Old timers probably need little introduction to the group’s business, which was born out of the deregulated markets for telecoms, gas and electricity.
