Our recommendation of crystalline solar cell manufacturer Renesola in September has done well with its forecasts being upgraded twice in as many months. But the business is dependent on one thing to ensure it continues to do well - its ability to access scrap silicon which is its main raw material and getting increasing volumes will become more difficult as its requirements increase. Another company in the same space is Powerfilm, also a solar cell manufacturer but this time one which is concentrating on the use of thin films to reduce silicon consumption, a process which the company says probably only requires one hundredth of the amount of silicon to make a solar cell.
