Richard King and Kiran Shah, the duo behind Character (CCT; 75p), have been running the UK’s largest independent toy distributor for over a decade and their early backgrounds in the rag trade have clearly given them the edge to survive in an industry notorious for its regular ups and downs. In the early years, Character was a company which had to live on its wits but this is perhaps much less so now. The business began life distributing toys for manufacturers without their own distribution in the UK and would often be appointed as exclusive distributor in exchange for providing a minimum guarantee and royalties to the licensor.
