Judges Scientific (JDG; 9960p) is an old friend to SCSW and its shares have just attained a lofty new high of over £100. One of the things that has always struck me about that business, a buy-and-build in the scientific instrumentation space, is chairman David Cicurel’s huge aversion to issuing new shares; he always prefers to pay cash for acquisitions because the businesses it buys tend to be cash generative. I still remember in my last full profile back in May 2015 at 1463p, I quoted him saying to me, “the best deal I can do for shareholders is to buy the biggest instrumentation company that I can for cash.” One promising a similar strategy of buying for cash is Essentra.
