Reach already has a proven track record of cutting costs to manage revenue declines so whilst COVID-19 has impacted on its advertising, circulation and events revenue streams (after an opening 12 weeks for the year that had been in line), it has taken pre-emptive action very quickly. This includes halting discretionary spend whilst directors, along with some members of the most senior editorial team, will take a pay reduction of 20%. Overall, 20% of Reach’s workforce has also been furloughed with other employees taking a 10% pay reduction.
