Buying or selling of shares by a firm’s directors can be a great clue for investors. A cluster of three or more directors selling or buying is invariably meaningful and this has piqued my interest in Essentra (ESNT; 434p), which supplies small but essential components. The shares are down from a high of around £10 a couple of years ago and CEO Paul Forman who joined in 2016 (after seven years successfully turning around threads and zips maker Coats) has done much of the buying.Essentra started life in the 1940s as a division of paper giant Bunzl and its mainstay used to be making cigarette filters at Yarrow.
