FDP has acquired Affinity Systems for an initial £3.7m with another £4m based on future performance. Affinity’s revenues last year were £2.3m and pretax profit was £0.2m so it’s clearly small but the reason for buying it is that it expands FDP’s footprint beyond its financial vertical in the big data space into the utility sector. Affinity has a particular expertise in the field of sensor data management and reporting. For instance, it played a key role in the design, development and testing of the meter management and repository data mart for the electricity board in Ontario, which enables retrieval and querying of smart meter data and can process millions of records per second.
