The shares fell out of bed with a trading update saying that its sea lice treatment, Salmosan, had seen sales impacted since January when a generic was launched by Abbot in Chile. As a mature off-patent product, a generic was always a threat and in a defensive move, Benchmark has reacted quickly by offering modest discounts and secured long-term contracts, which ought to drive a recovery next year. Benchmark is jointly working on a next generation treatment with a major pharmaceutical company and whilst a development plan has progressed well, some delays in delivery of the application technology will see the product launch a year later in FY16.
