Among the most battered areas of the stock market in the past few years have been shares in the major high street banks. Most of the clearing banks had the ignominity of cutting their dividends, having to carry out horrible rescue rights issues but then despite being refinanced by taxpayers many took a schematic view of lending in the UK and continued to turn down even those customers who were of good credit quality in order to hoard cash.
