At odds with the difficulties in the retail sector, toy supplier and brand owner Character produced more barnstorming results  due to the strength of its toy portfolio and an aggressive stance to pricing to ensure its ranges remained attractive to a cost conscious consumer. For H1, sales went up by a third to £58.1m and profit before tax by 78% to £6.6m. Earnings grew even faster, up 82% to 18.2p, helped by the additional £5m share buyback in the period leaving net cash at £0.5m.The results would have been even better were it not for the poor December weather, which resulted in sales that month being slower than would otherwise have been the case.
