A classic mistake made by countless investors is to buy shares in bombed-out companies too early. In the case of making an investment in the solar sector you are also going to be reliant on market gyrations in commoditised prices and also sudden changes in government policy, which can give palpitations. These issues affected PVCS, a manufacturer of multicrystalline wafers used in photovoltaic solar cells and it had a dreadful 2009, with a reported drop in earnings per share from 21p to 6.1p. The issues were, however, not specific to PVCS and affected the entire sector.
