The Financial Times of 18 April carried the headline, “Dash for trash among mid caps” citing  that investors had been selling defensive shares such as pharmaceuticals and tobacco and were piling into cyclical stocks. In particular, the article noted that the biggest share price gains were being seen in companies with a capital structure heavily weighted towards debt.Share prices of such companies have been  rising as worries that these  companies would breach bank covenants receded and shareholders would no longer see their investments wiped out by debt for equity swaps.
