Shoe Zone (SHOE; 67p) was established in the 1980s by the father of CEO Anthony and chairman Charles Smith. I recall meeting them a few years ago. Over lunch I also recall asking them randomly about the store in  sleepy coastal town Deal and was astonished when they precisely recalled its exact position on the parade, which stores were adjacent, rent and the individual landlord’s details - demonstrating the founders eye and serious property nous. As they  explained, in the early days the business sold shoes but it was really a property company and it was only in 1997 that Anthony relaunched the business as Shoe Zone with the aim to become the “lowest price footwear retailer,” targeting the C2DE demographic. ...
