Kate Swann is the archetypal City pinup of the 21st century. As chief executive of WH Smith, the London-listed retailer, she famously once said that if that business didn’t exist you wouldn't want to invent it. Without her hard nosed dispassionate approach the retail relic would almost certainly have disappeared from the high street; she ditched its low margin entertainment products like CDs, DVDs and video games whilst expanding its more profitable newspapers, magazines and stationery side to ensure its survival.
