When Woolworths went into administration in 2008,   administrators Deloitte assigned a vast number of their shop leases to the pound stores including Poundland (PLND; 168p)  and 99p Stores. These were universally big box stores (6,000 sq ft+) on the high street in prominent locations, which would never have otherwise become available. Poundland, led by Jim McCarthy, a former managing director of J Sainsbury, took 85 of the units and these provided a shot in the arm for the business. By the time it joined the Full List in March 2014, Poundland had grown to 517 stores and it laid out  plans to open 60 new units each year, with the ultimate target being to double the UK estate to 1,000 outlets.With all the credit c ...
