When Woolworths went into administration in 2008,   administrators Deloitte assigned a vast number of their shop leases to the pound stores including Poundland (PLND; 168p)  and 99p Stores. These were universally big box stores (6,000 sq ft+) on the high street in prominent locations, which would never have otherwise become available. Poundland, led by Jim McCarthy, a former managing director of J Sainsbury, took 85 of the units and these provided a shot in the arm for the business.
