Land of Leather has issued a trading update for Q2, a period which included the important January sales period. This said that the store opening programme remained ahead of plan with seven stores opened in Q2 (building on the six opened in Q1) and giving rise to total sales for Q2 up 12.8% but down 4.6% on a same-stores basis, partly due to the strong comparatives of 10.5%. Even despite the faster than expected opening programme, introducing new costs into the P&L (pre-opening costs and early trading losses could be £1m from the 13 stores), the company has managed to increase its gross margins so that it still anticipates H1 is going to be significantly ahead of last year.
