French Connection - Continues to open overseas franchised stores

French Connection has reported a broadly inline Q1 update. Like-for-like sales in UK retail, which is the part everyone worries about, were down 1.8%. Sure, as expected, sales in the early part of the period were weak (first six weeks -5%) but it ended the period in positive territory thanks to the timing of Easter, bank holidays, good weather and the Royal Wedding. As expected, gross margin has declined due to input cost rises but this is all factored into the share price. The small rationalised North America retail business performed well with like-for-like revenue up by 1.6% in the period and with margins flat.The French Connection story is however really about the growth from wholesale, which is being driven by the open ...
