H&T - Barnstorming progress in light of high gold price

It was no surprise to hear H&T say profits are running significantly ahead of management's expectations. Pawnbroking, the core business, has benefited from the sustained higher price of gold, which has enhanced the yield on unredeemed loans. But the outperformance has more to do with H&T's gold buying activity, which it began a couple of years ago as an alternative offer for its pawnbroking customers enabling them to sell their gold items outright. The strong gold price plus the fact that it is buying gold jewellery in pounds, melting it and selling it on in dollars is clearly benefiting from the weak pound. But H&T isn't a one trick pony - the weak property market is also enabling it to find more prominent site ...
