Bloomsbury Publishing - Buys Rowan and Littlefield academic publisher for £65m

Results last month were overshadowed by Bloomsbury’s largest ever acquisition. It is buying Rowman & Littlefield’s academic publishing business for US$83m (£65m). Founded in 1949, R&L’s imprints include Rowman & Littlefield and Lexington Books and cover academic arts, humanities and social sciences, with sales generated through print and ebooks. It adds 40,000 titles to Bloomsbury’s 57,000 academic titles so gives it real scale. In FY23, R&L made a pretax profit of US$6m (£5m) on sales of US$36m. The purchase is financed from existing cash and debt, and is eps enhancing from day one even before operational synergies are accounted for.
