• Cash shells have speculative potential but have been thin on the ground since AIM changed the rules so that new companies with no trading business must raise at least £3m cash on admission. The same rule applies to companies that sell their only trading business. One very interesting situation that remains then is Aurum Mining  (AUR; 3.5p), which started life as a cash shell, did a mining deal in Kazakhstan buying the Andash gold and copper licence and raised a heap of cash at 147p. A legal challenge to the title meant that the company subsequently disposed of its interest and  after shareholder pressure returned £23.5m to shareholders.
