A new international treaty came into force on 16 February to curb  global warming by placing caps on the greenhouse gas emissions produced by large factories and power stations. This requires them to reduce their emissions or face hefty fines. An alternative approach, introduced under the “EU Emissions Trading Scheme”, is for the companies to buy “carbon credits” from emissions-reducing projects in developing countries to offset against their own excess emissions.
