The hedge fund shorters who were around when I recommended Pets at Home in the September 2017 issue (at 176.5p) have clearly come unstuck. The usual culprits had been placing bearish stories in the Times back then as they tried to bring down the share price but Pets has turned the ship and just reported a strong first half, saying it is on track to deliver full year profit growth ahead of plan.  Pets ended September with 452 superstores, having opened just one in the six month period. Pretax profit was up 19% year-on-year to £45m on sales up 9% to £546m.The key to the group’s success was the retail division, which saw like-for-like sales growth of 7.8% to £479.8m.
