There is often a dash for bombed out shares around the turn of the year. This year is the turn of Microsaic (MSYS; 3.8p), down from a float price of 47p in 2011. The company, which has developed the world’s smallest mass spectrometer, is a spinout from Imperial College. Traditionally, these instruments, which provide a reliable method for identifying substances, are bulky – over 6ft long and weighing 15st - but Microsaic’s system is the size of a small microwave and can be used in the field to analyse substances, from early-stage drugs to the purity of drinking water.
