The eyewear industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Meta (the owner of Facebook, Whatsapp and Snapchat) has launched what is at the most basic level a fancy computer worn on the face that can project virtual objects into the wearer's field of view. They can show video calls, identify objects through AI, play games and take photos. It has also taken a 5% stake in eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica and penned a 10-year deal with its Ray-Ban brand, which having bought Nuance Audio can incorporate hearing aids into the frame (pending FDA clearance).
