The 'January effect' is in full swing. Last time we pointed out that if the US stock market fell for the first five days of the year, history going back over 60 years suggests a 50/50 chance that the market would be down for the whole year. If it falls in January as a whole the odds rise to 89% of the market either falling noticeably for the whole year, or barely moving one way or another. As we have said previously, where the US stock market goes, so goes the UK, which is where most of you have your exposure. The UK is nowhere near as overpriced as the US, which may limit downside but not eliminate the risk.
