The shares fell from 310p to 260p in the past few weeks, even though H&T has reported that its results for 2009 will show pretax profit at the top end of market forecasts - in other words more than Â£18.2m (eps 37p). At the end of December there were 122 stores, as well as 50 retail mall units which buy scrap gold. The latter were opened over the past 12 months and have driven the outperformance. In particular, H&T says that profits from gold scrapping more than tripled (from Â£4m in FY08), led by the higher average gold price and the significant rise in gold purchasing volumes.
