With interest rates cut to a record low and expected to stimulate consumer spending, we think Marstons (MARS; 121p) is an excellent recovery situation. Subscribers may perhaps better know the business as Wolverhampton & Dudley, which in 2007 changed its name to reflect expansion outside its Midlands heartland. The business itself has been around for 118 years. Like East Anglian rival Greene King, (GNK; 450p) recent years have been marked by the acquisitions of sleepy family owned operators. This included the acquisition of Marstons itself in 1999, which brought in  900 pubs in the East Midlands, North West and Wales as well as the ubiquitous brewery.
