The shares spiked sharply higher after pawnbroker H&T reported that trading for the year to 31 December had been strong and as a result it will beat market expectations. In particular, retail turnover in the second half of the year grew significantly. The company  also began an activity of buying jewellery from customers specifically intended for scrapping and this plus unredeemed pledges had also benefited from the high price of gold. H&T's store expansion continued in the second half of 2008, with ten new stores opened and two more bought, taking it to a record 16 new openings this year.
