Barely a day goes by without a bid for a small company and the hospitality sector has particularly thinned recently with bids for City Pubs, Franca Manca-owner Fulham Shore and Wagamama’s owner Restaurant Group. The industry was one of the sectors hardest hit by COVID-19, and these bids are clearly attempts to acquire good businesses at the bottom.  Covid also saw many independents permanently disappear from the high street despite government help (Eat Out to Help Out, reduced VAT, business rates moratoriums), while other chains agreed to CVA arrangements, including Itsu, Wasabi and Chilango, and Leon flirted with a CVA before being acquired by EG Group; even Pret perhaps suffered from brand fatigue and closed 40 sites.
