Back in 2009 when I first alighted on JD Sports, the retail sector was having a frightening time and most investors looking at the retail space were going away and  putting a cold flannel on their heads. But at the time I first wrote on JD it was starting to grow sales at a phenomenal pace helped by sales from branded “exclusives” with Nike and Adidas Originals footwear and its own-brands, like Mackenzie, Sergio Tacchini and Nicholas Deakins. I wrote at the time that JD was more akin to a fashion retailer and brand manager than a sports retailer and so it proved, especially during the last five years when the business recorded astonishing like-for-like sales growth in excess of 10%.
