I was very sad to learn that my dear friend Jim Slater had passed away on 18 November, aged 86. I have known Jim since 1996 when I got a call out of the blue to ask me if I was the proprietor of Sharewatch and summoning me to lunch at Brooks’s Club in St James’. There I met the great man for the first time and he asked me if I would consider selling my newsletter to him but staying on to write it. He said that as we often alighted on the same stocks it made sense to come together.The newsletter was aged three and I was cutting my teeth. I was taken aback, embarrassed that he should show that interest. In the end I wasn’t sure I was ready. Here was someone who once ran Britain’s biggest company, Slater Walker ...
