You could easily think that an iconic English brand like Laura Ashley is just too big a business to outperform. Yet despite being a household name in home furnishings and women’s clothing in the UK as well as internationally, the brand appears to be so much bigger than the business with sales standing at less than £290m and its market capitalisation barely £145m.Perhaps the current low rating has something to do with the strongly Malaysian flavour to the Board. For the last 13 years the business has been controlled out of Malaysia by conglomerate MUI and its billionaire chairman, Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Peng.
