Education Development International - Benefits from rising unemployment

EDD reported a very barnstorming set of results for the year to 30 September. Sales were up 34% to Â£21.5m and pretax profit grew 53% to Â£3.2m. Earnings were up 51% to 6p.FY08 was marked by the acquisition of a second exam board, ASET, which contributed sales of Â£2.2m for 10 months. This business had the same product as EDD but in different sectors and ASET was absorbed into the Coventry office with a zero change in overall headcount and together with the closure of two smaller offices had an electrifying effect on performance. This enabled EDDâ€™s UK qualifications and assessment side to grow sales 53% to Â£11.9m and generated a gross margin of 83.4%.
