The profit performance of pound chain discounters and pile-it-high retailers like Poundland, B&M and Sports Direct demonstrates the permanent shift in shopping habits and confirms that the snob factor is diminishing with far fewer people saying they wouldn't be seen dead in these shops. Not on quite such a rocket-powered profits ascent as these three but still looking promising is Shoe Zone, at 176.5p, a recently floated discounter that is the UK market leader in value shoes.
