Albemarle went through our stoploss at 230p in November and a trading update has this month served to confirm our caution back then. The latest Q3 was weak, unhelped by the recently plunging gold price. Albemarle had been looking down the barrel of a gun for a while as it had continued to roll out gold buying kiosks/shops as the gold price fell. But it now adds that its pawn broking business is now also under pressure due to the “reduction in gold jewellery in circulation and the increase in high street competition, resulting in a declining pledge book.” The chief executive has fallen on his sword and a replacement is sought.The shares have halved since our stoploss price but we see no reason to rush back in. ...
