At odds with JD's rival JJB Sports which limps on bloodshod, this month reporting a collapse in margins and also like for-like sales that fell 8.7%, JD has bucked the trend by reporting positive like-for-likes although there has been some gross margin pressure in a promotional environment. For the first 19 weeks of the year, despite the wet weather JD has reported like-for-like sales growth of 1.5% (sports +1.2% and fashion +3%), slightly ahead of the 1.2% growth reported for the first nine weeks. This year's interims will also be impacted by an operating loss at Blacks, which was acquired last year and is in a turnaround mode and JD is expecting the â€œbulkâ€ of a Â£10m loss at Blacks as well a ...
