Our February edition applauded a rip-roaring January but also suggested a new FTSE-100 peak just ahead at 8050. It hit 8046 on 16th February and then fell 10%. It bounced from 20th March, as the mini banking crisis in the US was quickly resolved but it still remains 5% below that 8046 peak. We also suggested that the idea of buy-and-hold had to be unlearnt, and that the lesson of the 1970s, broadly-speaking the most obvious precedent for today’s conditions, was to bank “handsome short term profits.” This in turn rhymed with last month’s observation that bounces will be “very sharp and quickly lost.” The March surprise, which unsettled markets, was the mini banking crisis.
