The oil industry is in the grip of a growing boom with new technologies fuelling exploration in previously hard to reach areas. New geographies such as West Africa and Columbia are suddenly hot new oil provinces. But it wasn’t always the way. Back in 2004, Columbia, for instance, was almost a dirty word to investors who perceived it as an area with security concerns that was only suited to drug barons.
