Just ten years ago, virtually all of James Fisher's profits came from its traditional shipping activities with a large fleet of tankerships, general purpose vessels and cable-laying ships. However, under its chairman, Tim Harris, Fisher has completely switched the direction of its business  into a 'Marine Support Services' operation.Harris had recognised that the real value within Fisher's business was its highly skilled personnel (such as marine engineers, naval architects, technical specialists and vessel operatives) who were often operating in technically-complex sectors and he has used this as a base for Fisher's move into technical engineering solutions and operational expertise in the marine environment.
