Conditions in the building industry are hardly brilliant. The value of commercial starts fell by 30% in the three years to 2010, keeping profitability under intense pressure, particularly for many of the smaller suppliers of building products. Strange to relate how shares in Alumasc (ALU; 155.5p), which derives 70% of its sales from this area, are standing at a new high for the year.In truth Alumasc’s building materials side is not totally immune to the problems but brokers are expecting it to continue growing its profits mainly because its second smaller business in precision engineered components is growing very quickly.
