Results for 2009 were the first under the new chief executive, Stephen Cook, appointed in February 2009. On a continuing basis - excluding Greetings Direct - which is being wound down - pretax profit (before various one offs) was Â£1.94m, a 31% underlying improvement on sales down 10% to Â£30m. Eps was 7p on a lower tax charge.The increase in profitability was due to a much-improved profit contribution in the Garden division, which saw profits rise by Â£0.5m to Â£1.81m.Successful Spring and Autumn sales campaigns for the Gardening Direct brand meant it added a net 52,000 new customers to its active database, taking the total to 312,000 and this gave rise to an 11% increase in sales to Â£11.9m.
